As hospitals and government agencies scramble for protective gear for medical staff dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, more businesses are attempting to enter the mask-making market.

A Texas businessman, a corporation that produces pet pee pads, and a former medical-supply executive in Singapore are all investing in equipment or retooling production lines to produce medical-grade face mask holders. New entrants, on the other hand, face the same problem as existing mask makers: a scarcity of critical supplies and equipment.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States is advising the general public not to wear face mask holders if they are safe, stating that the supply should be kept for healthcare employees. According to healthcare officials, the expanding U.S. epidemic is rapidly depleting scarce remaining resources at several hospitals, and government backstops aren't keeping up.

3M Co. has increased production of N95 face masks to 1.1 billion per year, with 400 million sold in the United States.

Vice President said on Thursday, "We are seeing a drastic rise in demand." N95 face mask holders, which filter out 95% of tiny particles, are the most effective at preventing infection. Surgical masks, which are easier and less expensive, are usually worn to prevent disease transmission. Healthcare staff is in high demand for both styles of masks.

Hospitals normally offer N95 masks for less than $1 each, but due to the shortage, prices on the open market have risen.

Smaller businesses, too, want to increase demand. Laboratories, a Salt Lake City-based company that conducts mask consistency checks, has added weekend hours to accommodate a fourfold rise in demand from new customers.

Face masks, such as surgical masks and fabric masks, were used as a public and personal health protection measure against the spread of SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their use is intended as source control to restrict virus transmission and personal security to avoid infection in both community and healthcare settings. In group environments, their source control feature is emphasized.
